A 56-year old man was brutally attacked and left lying in the middle of a road with serious head injuries late last night.
The man, who has not yet been indentified, was found by passers by in Worsely Drive, Swindon at around 11.45pm.
The police were called immediately and the injured man was rushed to the Great Western Hospital but then transferred to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford for specialist head treatment.
His condition is thought to be serious but stable.
Police believe the attack happened as the man walked home in the residential area of Worsely Drive after he had been to the Windmill pub in Freshbrook.
They are appealing for any witnesses to contact Swindon CID immediately on 0845 408 7000.
