Gazette readers have helped to give Wiltshire based charity Help for Heroes a wonderful New Year boost by beating our target of £50,000 less than nine months after our appeal was launched.

All of the cash raised by intrepid people from across the county, who have done everything from abseiling to bungee jumping and marathon running to cycle rides, will go towards creating a personnel recovery centre in Wiltshire.

It is hoped a contract is about to be signed by Help for Heroes and the Ministry of Defence on Tedworth House at Tidworth. It will be turned into a place where injured servicemen and women can continue to get help once they have left hospital.

Help for Heroes co-founder Bryn Parry believes these centres are essential to allow those who are still recovering from mental trauma as well as physical disability to continue their rehabilitation.

Mr Parry, who launched the charity three years ago with his wife Emma, said: “I want to thank all of the people who have contributed to the appeal organised by the Gazette.

“They can be sure every penny of their money will go towards helping our servicemen and women. We are really grateful to everyone who raises money for the charity. It does not matter how small the amount. The coffee mornings and the sponsored walks are vital and it is wonderful when everyone feels they can become involved.”

Wiltshire Help for Heroes co-ordinator Fiona Gilbert said: “The Wiltshire H4H volunteer team can’t thank the Gazette enough for all its wonderful support, time and effort in 2010. Without the brilliant coverage the paper has given us we really wouldn’t have achieved what we have.”

Gazette editor Gary Lawrence said: “We would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported the appeal and hope they will continue to do so.”

The Gazette’s appeal for Help for Heroes will continue into 2011 and so if you are planning to organise an event make sure you let us know so we can give you publicity and make sure as much money as possible is raised.
