Devizes viewers of the BBC Antiques Road Show on Sunday will have been moved by the Churchillian memorabilia concerning his funeral in 1965, brought in by the daughter of the Rev J E James, then Rector of Blaydon, Oxfordshire, who conducted his committal in Blaydon churchyard.
They may not, however, have realised that this JE James had earlier in his career been a curate at St John’s Church, Devizes.
He is not to be confused, though no doubt he occasionally was, with his contemporary, the Rev E J James, minister of the Congregational Church then in Northgate Street.
John Leech, The Fairway, Devizes.
