Calne Children’s Centre was overwhelmed by pirates last week – and the booty they bagged was all for a good cause.

Scores of families turned out for the annual Barnardo’s Big Toddle at the Sure Start Centre on Wednesday to raise money for Barnardo’s.

Toddlers, parents and staff got into the spirit of this year’s pirate theme by donning head scarves and eye patches to take part in a half-mile sponsored walk at the centre.

Local playgroups and nurseries also got involved to help boost funds and staff were delighted with the turnout.

Calne Sure Start Children’s Centre is managed by Barnardo’s South West on behalf of Wiltshire Council.

Barnardo’s team leader Katie Sims said: “The Big Toddle is a fantastic event as it’s all about children helping children.

“Everyone was really excited about taking part, and it was a good opportunity for parents to get to know each other in a fun setting.

“Every year it’s a great success and helps to raise hundreds of pounds for Barnardo’s.”

Calne Sure Start Children’s Centre provides free support and advice to local families with under-fives and has already registered more than 1,000 parents and children.

“Everybody walked around the school field which is quite far for some of them who haven’t turned one yet. Even the grown ups were dressed up.”
