Visitors to Chippenham might be baffled if they try to find their way around the town via an internet mapping system.
Eagle-eyed Geoff Endacott, of Beaven Close, spotted several glaring errors on the Google map for Chippenham, which could leave people scratching their heads as they search for supermarkets, golf courses and pubs.
He said: “I am a member of the Chippenham Model Railway Club and one of our members has set up a web page, which I was looking at the other night.
“There is a helpful link to Google Maps to show visitors how to find the venue and I'm glad I checked it.
“The Sports Centre seems to have moved into the former maths block at Sheldon School – that will disrupt lessons.”
Mr Endacott also quickly realised that other changes seem to have been made in the Monkton Park area of Chippenham, where The Olympiad has replaced Monkton House on the far end of the field.
The Wiltshire Council offices are now based on the grass by the River Avon, and their building has been taken over by the Monkton Park Golf Course.
“At least there is nearby shelter for the staff who have been evicted,” Mr Endacott said. “All they must do is stroll along to the Town Bridge where they will find that the Red Lion public house has thoughtfully been transferred from Lacock.”
Although the original map shows the location of certain landmarks and three supermarkets, it only takes a click and a drag of the mouse to convert the image into a street view photograph, which makes it clear to see that they are in fact not there.
“In some cases you can see the label is just a few buildings down,” Mr Endacott said. “But that doesn’t explain the Red Lion being on the end of Chippenham Town Bridge, or Somerfield being in the town when it has been Tesco for years.”
Mr Endacott decided not to seek an explanation from Google, but has now got friends checking for errors in their own towns.
