Lady the King Charles Spaniel is being treated at the vets after a blaze broke out at a house in Melksham this morning.
Ian Walker, 50, was working in the garden of his home in Metheun Avenue with his three dogs by his side when the blaze broke out in an undertairs cupboard.
When he realised the seriousness of the fire he got out the front of his home with the three spaniels but Lady ran back inside and had to be rescued. She is suffering from smoke inhalation.
Mr Walker and the other dogs Tramp and Tommy were unhurt but a budgerigar died in its cage. Mr Walker's wife was out at the time of the fire.
Three fire appliances were called to the house just after 9.40am today.
