More than 350 people donned their trainers to take part in Chippenham Harriers’ popular River and Fun Runs last week.

Raising money for the Gazette’s Help For Heroes appeal, runners young and old tackled either a 1.5km course or the 5km multi-terrain route from Monkton Park.

A number of people entered a 5km run for the first time after completing Chippenham Harriers’ nine-week beginners’ course.

Nina Matthew-Law, 37, of Calne, said: “Before I joined the beginners’ group, the only time I would run would be to get the washing in when it was raining.

“The Harriers have made everyone feel really welcome and have been very friendly.

“It has been a challenge but to go from not running at all to completing this course has been a fantastic journey.”

Winner of the River Run was Simon Nott from Calne’s John Bentley School, closely followed by Alex Carter from Team Bath AC and Alex Fisher from the Swindon Harriers. First woman home was Loren Bleaken from Team Bath.

Runners aged between 13 and 17 took part in the fun run, with Jed Stacey and Matthew Warren beating off stiff competition from the 95-strong field.

The first and second girls home were Kate Milson and Abigail Whittock.

Chippenham Harriers club chairman and River Run organiser Colin Morris said: “The River Run is a great community event which attracts people of all abilities and ages. You don’t have to be super-fit to take part and the distance is ideal for beginners.

“The club is really proud of everyone who took part, but especially our beginners who have worked very hard over the last nine weeks.

“The Fun Run really makes the event a family evening, it is fantastic to see so many kids getting out and getting some fresh air and exercise.”
