Thousands of bikers packed Calne town centre at the weekend to mark the 10th anniversary of the Rotary Club’s motorcycle meet.

More than 4,000 leather clad riders from all over the country descended on the town before riding to the Bowood estate.

They then gathered on the terrace in front of Robert Adam’s Dioceltian wing at Bowood House for an aerial photograph, before enjoying music by jazz band Worried Men on the lawn. Calne Rotarians, who organised the event, were thrilled by the its success.

There were bikes on every spare inch of land. Rotarian Mike Smith said: “It was absolutely brilliant, and the atmosphere was amazing.

“The bikers were so chilled, they come on these magnificent, expensive machines and they just want to show them off to their mates.

“The ride out to Bowood was awesome and we had riders leaving every two minutes for half an hour. Lord Lansdowne was able to get a brilliant aerial photograph.

“We had good food stalls all over town, bands playing, vintage bikes parked at The Wharf and people of all ages taking part – we had a bike from 1912 driven by a biker who must have been born just a couple of years later. We don’t quite know how we will top it for next year but we will do our best.”

The event’s chosen charities were Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Calne Youth Trust and Rotary charities.

Mr Smith added: “We raised more than £1,000 from a cake stall and bric-a-brac stall which was just great and we would estimate we raised well over £5,000 on the day.”
