It is not surprising that campaigners for Tesco in Marlborough are upset, but what has to be accepted is that there is a legal planning system which has to be observed. Perhaps local planners should be concerned as much as the public.
Marlborough needs another supermarket to keep Waitrose on its toes, but due to a lack of sites and parking in town, an out of town site is the only option. Don’t lose sight or hope about Tesco coming to town, we are not dealing with a back street corner shop, but a vast business empire.
Perhaps the time has come to go back to Tesco and suggest it provides a shuttle bus service. This worked in Newbury when the out- of-town shopping area was started.
Marlborough has been without a competitive supermarket for years, so a few more months shouldn’t matter.
