Boxing champion Joe Hughes has been given a silver salver at a civic reception in Malmesbury Town Hall.

Mr Hughes, who is only 19, won his first national Senior ABA light welterweight title in May, a title previously won by world champion Ricky Hatton.

Also honoured were league footballers Charlie Griffin and James Constable who both won promotion this year with Stevenage Borough and Oxford United respectively.

Mayor Patrick Goldstone presented all three sportsmen with certificates.

Coun Goldstone said: “There aren’t many towns the size of Malmesbury which can boast a national boxing champion and two football league players.

“All three of them are really nice guys and something for young people to aspire to.

“Joe is only 19 and has a bright future ahead of him.”

Charlie Griffin, a former member of Oaksey youth team, has gone on to play for both Chippenham Town and Swindon Town.

James Constable learned his football at Malmesbury Youth under managers Alan Baker and Pete Wright.

He later teamed up with Mr Griffin at Chippenham where the duo played together up front.

Notably Mr Constable scored the first two competitive goals at the new Wembley stadium for Kidderminster in the FA Trophy Final.

He returned to the stadium in May this year, captaining Oxford United to victory in the final of the Conference playoff.
