Nearly 200 people, many of them with relatives who have cancer, took part in Relay for Life in Pewsey at the weekend to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

It is believed that they will have raised about £10,000, considerably down on last year’s total of £15,000.

Organiser Ellie Day said: “It was well supported by the people who took part but it was a shame we did not get more people dropping in.”

The third annual relay took place on the field behind the The Coopers pub from noon on Saturday.

Walkers enjoyed both sunshine and rain and one supporter, Elaine Haynes, walked for 18 hours on her own.

During a Candle of Hope ceremony, candles were placed in paper bags on which messages were written about people with cancer.

Suzy Crossman, who has lost a number of close family members to cancer, made a moving speech while Alex Cuff sang and Pewsey Relay for Life founder Katie Day gave poetry readings with Jane Watherstone.

Musical entertainment also took place at various times throughout the 24 hours.

Among the supporters of the relay are Wiltshire Fire brigade and Pewsey Vale tennis and netball clubs.

The relay is organised by a team of volunteers.
