I implore anyone who is thinking of planting Leylandii trees to think hard. About 20 years ago a row was put in just over my garden fence. They were cut and kept at a decent height. But the property changed hands and the trees grew. Then large cracks appeared outside and inside my home.

We had a surveyor who said the roots of the trees were invading my garden and draining all the moisture. A request to have them cut brought no result, the cracks got wider. I could put my hand through the outer wall. Every room in the house was affected, some worse than others. So now I have had to endure three weeks of noise, dust and dirt. At the age of 88 I could do without it.

Although we got our insurance company on to it, it will still be expensive. We have to pay a £1,000 excess.

So please think where you plant Leylandii, the remaining ten trees are now 20 feet tall.
