With reference to the blue plaque on the Assize Courts in Devizes, who is able to read this with all the fencing around the front? Mr Jeff Ody had a good idea. I think it was Italy where they put up hoardings describing what it used to be like.
As the county council took the building from the town’s ownership, should they supply this? I expect they received a good price in 1986.
I would like to repeat my dream – that is for storage in the cellar where the cells were. On the ground floor a Devizes and district heritage centre. Then another floor for arts and crafts. Maybe the Lawrence Society might be interested. On the top floor could be flats. The original building had the cells and two floors with high ceilings, so I am sure it could be made into three floors. If the Town Council is able to get Lottery funding for Hillworth Park, then I am sure the Assize Courts could be once again a major building in Devizes. Also I would think if the price was right, Mr Dockrat, the present owner, would be only too pleased to sell.
