Students from Malmesbury School’s upper sixth enjoyed a final farewell last week at their end of year prom.

More than 100 students rounded off their seven-year stint at Malmesbury with style.

The event, entirely organised by the student prom committee, was held in the Cricklade Country club.

Head of sixth form Andy Backwell said: ‘The prom committee did brilliantly.

“All I did was stand in the background.”

“I have had the pleasure of teaching this group from Year 7 to Year 13 and they have always been a joy to teach.”

The previous evening, students from the upper sixth put together a leavers’ show, which included performances from bands, soloists and a barbershop quartet.

“They set up in the school hall and teachers and students came along to watch,” said Mr Backwell.

“The quality of musical talent from this year group is simply outstanding”.

Entertainment during the proms was provided by a DJ who had been booked by the student committee.

Allan Midwinter, 19, who is studying maths, biology and religious studies at the school, said: “It was great just to have the whole year group in the same place for a few hours before we all go our separate ways.

“I’ve spent a long time at Malmesbury School.

“It’s been great and I have made some life-long friends.”

The students left Cricklade and headed for after-parties which were being held across the town.

Mr Backwell said: “At midnight there was a strange sort of Cinderella moment when suddenly everyone disappeared.

“There were a few tears from both staff and pupils and then the students were gone.

“They were such a supportive year both to the teachers and to the other students.

“For that they will be sorely missed.”
