Visitors to this year’s Emergency Services Show will get to see some of the country’s best trained dogs put through their paces.
The police dog trials, led by the Wiltshire Police dog section, is a new attraction for the sixth show to be held at Hullavington airfield on September 12.
Twelve police dogs from seven forces will be tested on their heelwork and agility before facing a gang of armed ‘criminals’.
The teams will have to show tenacity and aggression to accost the offenders, some armed with weapons, while remaining controlled and obedient to their handlers.
There will also be the opportunity for visitors to see how the police use spaniels to hunt for illegal drugs.
Show committee member Chief Inspector Mark Levitt said: “This is a unique opportunity for the public to see the best police dog teams in the region competing against each other, and it is bound to be a great crowd pleaser.
“It is also a perfect fit with the aim of the show, which is to showcase the work of the emergency services and those who work with them to keep our communities safe.”
The show is organised by a voluntary committee drawn from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Wiltshire Police and Great Western Ambulance Service.
On-line registration is now open for exhibitors and traders who are not charged to take part, although they are asked to make a donation from their takings on the day.
Committee chairman Chris Harvey said: “Last year, we had over 9,000 people through the gates, and we’re hoping this year’s show will be even bigger.
“Our focus is to give visitors a great day out, while promoting the work of the emergency services.
“It is a great opportunity for charities, community groups, businesses and others to get their messages across to a wide audience and in an informal setting.”
