Glazier Steve Brooks has submitted revised plans to build homes on the site of his business.

Mr Brooks, owner of Devizes Glass in New Park Street, withdrew a planning application to build five one-bedroom houses in March and the new plan is to build four homes, three one-bedroom houses and a two-bedroom house.

Mr Brooks, who has owned Devizes Glass for 26 years, believes developing the premises into houses is the only option after he tried to sell the business for years without success.

Mr Brooks did not wish to comment on the new planning application.

However when the original application had been submitted to Wiltshire Council he told the Gazette: “The Government is crying out for starter homes and I feel we have the perfect site.”

As well as a reduction by one home, the new plan also includes design alterations.

But there are no parking spaces planned for the new homes, as was the case with the original application.

Mr Brooks’ architect Peter Kent cites in the application to Wiltshire Council other recent housing schemes in the town centre where no parking has been provided.

Mr Kent says: “The applicant is aware of the highway officer’s preference to see a development with parking provided, but it has been concluded that the amenity of the dwellings will be better with no cars permitted access to the development.”

The previous tenant of the Royal Oak pub next the site raised concerns about the original application and said that residents might complain about pub noise.

Wiltshire Council’s environmental health department has considered this in relation to the new planning application and has no objections.
