Wiltshire Police arrested 97 people for drink driving last month.
As part of a national drink driving campaign, police in Wiltshire tested 3377 drivers in June, with 2.87 per cent returning positive results. This compares to 6.4 per cent who tested positive in the campaign last year, from 735 drivers.
Among the under-25s 672 drivers were breathalysed with 23 testing positive. Approximately one in five road deaths in the UK have excess alcohol as a contributory factor.
Inspector Nick Elton, operations manager for the Wiltshire Police Road Policing Unit said: “I believe this has been the most productive drink drive campaign to date with the number of breath tests carried out locally having increased nearly five fold. The 97 drink drivers breathalysed and arrested will be brought to justice and could face disqualification, a fine or potentially imprisonment as a result of their choice to drink and drive. Approximately one in five road deaths in the UK have excess alcohol as a contributory factor and this is far too high.”
“I would like to personally thank those 3280 motorists who have been stopped and were tested negatively for their co operation and for heeding the advice not to drink and drive.”
