At around 1am recently, following a strong smell of gas coming from the London Road area, we were awoken and alerted to the possible evacuation of the retirement flats at Churchill Court.
The sensitive operation of rousing the residents of over 30 flats was conducted smoothly, efficiently and without panic.
The fire officers were helpful, caring and courteous (and bless the one that made everyone a cup of tea). The police maintained a polite, unobtrusive and reassuring presence.
In the event the area was declared safe at about 2.30am, evacuation to the leisure centre was not necessary, and we were able to return to our beds.
To our vital public services, too often targets for criticism and complaint, a big thank you for your professionalism and pleasantness.
R. A. Macmillan, Churchill Court, Marlborough.
