Some of your readers might be interested to know that the swan recently taken from the Devizes Crammer (Gazette & Herald, June 24) has now been returned.
It was captured by us because of reports of fishing line hanging from its beak. In fact the line was so tightly wound round the lower beak that there was a risk that the swan could have lost the lower beak; from there the line was wrapped around the tongue. It then continued down inside the neck and the hook, plus a load of line and other detritus, was well down the neck. We were unable to remove the line on site, so had to take the bird to the wildlife hospital at Newton Tony, where it required the work of a vet to remove the line under anaesthetic.
Happily the swan survived and was released on July 1 back onto the Crammer and hopefully will lead a peaceful life from now on.
