Pupils at Sherston School will be getting a look at wildlife in their new school pond funded in part by a Gazette and Herald competition.

The school won £500 of Whitehall Garden Centre vouchers after collecting newspaper mastheads and spent the money kitting out a new wildlife area.

The pond was officially opened by parish council chairman John Matthews.

An underwater camera is being set up and classes have started using the area.

Headteacher Nick Bowditch said it was the culmination of months of hard work. “First we had to get the land from the parish council so we are very grateful to them.

“We secured it with a fence and then we had a lot of help digging out the pond and getting it ready.

“Whitehall Garden Centre vouchers paid for lots of pond liners and plants. It looks really good and we just need to wait for the wildlife to arrive.

“We have already spotted an adult frog and a couple of dragonflies.”
