One hundred women joined forces last week to knit 2,000 poppies to sell for this year’s Remembrance Day.
Corsham Knitting Group members plan to sell the poppies for £2 each from October to raise funds for the Royal British Legion, which next year celebrates its 90th anniversary.
Knitting group chairman Margaret Gibbs, 66, of Neston, said: “It takes about ten minutes to knit one poppy, but it’s great fun.
“I am knitting them everywhere – in the car, watching the telly – and I knit everyday.
“This year we are knitting the poppies but in previous years we have created blankets for old people’s homes, blankets for the neonatal unit at Bath hospital, and woolly hats for Big Issue sellers.
“It is always for a good cause. You name it, we’ll knit it.”
Mrs Gibbs brings her 95-year-old mother Constance Roberts to the group, along with daughter Hazel and sister Helena Chivers.
She said: “We’ve tried to get the grandchildren into it as well but that is proving more difficult.”
The group was set up ten years ago and meets once a month at Corsham Community Centre in Beechfield Road. Members include founder Gwen Davies, 82, of Springfield Road, Box.
The group relies on donations of wool for its creations.
Member Carole Lewis of Broadstone in Corsham, said: “Last time we filled a Land Rover with 800lb of wool from Bristol.”
RBL community fundraiser Fiona Dobson said: “What’s so sweet about this is that each and every poppy is different.
“It’s just the perfect way to launch RBL into its 90th anniversary celebrations next year.”
