Children recreated the moment Eilmer the monk attempted man’s first flight from the roof of Malmesbury Abbey on Saturday.
Models of the monk were made and decorated at the Athelstan Museum before being launched from a scaffold tower near the abbey.
Chairman of the Friends of Athelstan Museum Roger Griffin said 40 children took part. He said: “In the morning we had workshops where the children made and decorated their little Eilmers.
“Some of them were more interested in dressing him up than making him into a flying machine.”
On Saturday four flight-inspired lectures, titled Flights of Fantasy, are being held in the town hall. They start at 10.30am and cost £5 each. For more information call (01666) 823748.
