Cyclists turned out in force to tear up the laps at Castle Combe race circuit and raise money for a good cause.

More than 450 riders of all ages and abilities took part in the event organised by the Chippenham and District Wheelers Club, hoping to cycle as many laps of the 1.9 mile course as possible.

On a warm and sunny evening they smashed their 5,000 mile target, cycling 5,257 miles in three hours and raising more than £1,000 for Age UK Wiltshire.

Other attractions on the midsummer bike night included a British Cycling ‘Go Ride’ skills circuit, DC Leisure’s spinning bikes and safety stamping of bikes by Wiltshire’s Road Safety Unit.

Andy Cook, chairman of the Wheelers, was delighted with the turnout and distance achieved on the night.

He said: “For just 450 local people of all ages to cycle 5,000 miles in three hours is a great achievement.

“We had great weather and attendees told us they had a brilliant time.”

Emily Cole, fundraising project worker for Age UK Wiltshire, said the charity was delighted to have been nominated by Chippenham Wheelers.

She said: “We believe the proceeds from the event, together with the generous support of Mars Refuel, has raised over £1,000 for Age UK Wiltshire. This is a terrific result and we are immensely grateful for being chosen to benefit from the event.”

She added: “A little practical help from Age Concern Wiltshire can make such a great difference to the lives of older vulnerable people, who have no one else to turn to. The money raised will be well spent, supporting one of the many hundreds of older people who use our services.”
