Students at Lavington School devised unusual methods of transport to get to their end of year prom.

About 120 Year 11 students, almost all the year group, attended the prom held at Leigh Park Hotel in Bradford on Avon on Friday evening.

Some arrived at the venue in stretch limousines, including a Hummer, while others arrived in a horse drawn carriage, articulated lorries, a pair of open top MGs, an ice cream van and a red double decker bus.

Mike Henley, a science teacher and pastoral leader for the upper school at Lavington, said: “The double decker bus had about two dozen students on board and on the destination panel it had Lavington School and year of 2010. The ice cream van had four of our male students in it while one of the articulated lorries had three of our female students in it.

“The students think about what transport to use to get to the prom as they like to be different.”

The prom was the last time the students were all together as they have now left school after sitting their GCSEs.

The girls wore ball gowns and dresses while the boys wore tuxedos or lounge suits. The evening included a disco and finger buffet but the students spent most of the time talking to friends and teachers.

Mr Henley said: “Everyone had a really good evening. The students looked amazing all dressed up and looked smarter than the teachers. You spend five years telling them to tuck their shirt in but they all looked grown up.

“There are wonderful lawns and gardens at the venue and most of the time the students were outside chatting.

“The prom finished at midnight but they didn’t want it to end and there were quite a few tears at the end of the evening. They are a good bunch of students and they have have left quite a gap in the school. I am sorry to see them go and wish them all the best for the future.”
