Courses offering alternatives to traditional subjects have improved the behaviour and attendance of students at St John’s School, Marlborough, says a teacher.

The pupils in Years 10 and 11 are taking part in new ACTIVE Pathway and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness courses that suit some better than GCSEs.

Now two photographic companies, Lowepro and Park Cameras, have donated equipment to help those wanting to focus on educational alternatives.

As well as photography, there is gardening, in which they have created their own allotment, cookery, car maintenance and valeting, painting, tiling and plastering. The courses have also improved pupils’ IT, presentation and interview skills.

Teacher Charlie Paul, who heads the project, said: “The course has not only improved the students’ attendance and behaviour but is equipping them with more employer-friendly skills.

“We have had a great deal of support from local businesses that have provided a range of equipment expertise, and we are extremely grateful to Lowepro and Park Cameras for their support.”

The photographic equipment will be taken to various locations, including the allotment. It will enable Mr Paul to improve the quality of lessons by allowing students to record information on location.
