A HOSPITAL, restaurants and improved leisure facilities are among the things the people of Calne would like to see in their town.

Town councillors last week considered the results of a two-year community consultation excercise which encouraged residents to comment on facilities needed in the community.

North Wiltshire District Council's area co-ordinator for Calne, Graham Wilson, said the report provides data on which councillors and local people could base their decisions when considering priorities and budget allocations.

The latest Community Planning Update brings together feedback from a wide range of consultation excercises which started last January with a public meeting attended by more than 100 people.

Local people and interested groups were invited to discuss positive and negative issues in the town and nearby villages and look at future needs.

In May more than 100 issues were raised at a What Matters To You roadshow in the town, and 71 residents returned questionnaires identifying what they would like to see in the town.

The feedback showed many people thought Calne needed a community hospital to carry out small operations and provide X-ray facilities, and many thought more GP surgeries were needed to cope with the growing population.

Restaurants, cafes, improved public transport and leisure facilities were also top of the agenda.

A significant number of people surveyed believed local people should be more involved in making things happen in the area.
