TRADERS in Malmesbury and the surrounding villages are to be canvassed for their views on proposals to boost trade with a logo for local produce.

North Wiltshire District Council's Malmesbury area committee approved the scheme in principle on Tuesday, but wanted feedback from retailers and producers before funding was agreed.

The aim of the project is to produce a logo which can be displayed on goods to show they are produced locally.

Councillors decided the scheme should cover mainly foodstuffs, and should include produce from Malmesbury as well as the surrounding villages.

They suggested the brand could be called Malmesbury Area Produce, but will be asking traders for their ideas.

The cost of promoting the brand to raise shoppers' awareness is estimated at £2,500.

Coun Jo Price said villages should be included to ensure a wide variety of products in the scheme.

Mayor Catherine Doody will be also be meeting with the chamber of commerce, retailers and the district council to discuss projects to stimulate business in the town.
