DON Rogers, the man who led Swindon Town to glory in the 1969 League Cup final, is being tipped as a successor for Pewsey soccer club manager Steve Wootton, who is standing down.

Pewsey Vale's committee will be interviewing two candidates for the manager's position tomorrow night.

They are Mr Rogers, who has had a long connection with the club, and former Corsham FC manager Peter Tripp.

Mr Rogers, who has managed teams including Swindon Town Youth, Lambourn, Supermarine and Hungerford will always be known in Wiltshire for scoring against Arsenal in Swindon Town's victory in the the League Cup final 31 years ago.

The Pewsey club has been going through a bad patch. In its last eight games in the Screwfix League first division Pewsey has managed one point and on Saturday they were hammered 11-0 by Devon side Exmouth.

The club has not formally named the two men who will be interviewed tomorrow night for the manager's position but sources in the club confirmed the candidates as Don Rogers and Peter Tripp.

Pewsey chairman Rob Thompson said: "Nobby Wootton and Russell Goodenough assistant manager have offered to stand down, although Nobby has asked to be considered as assistant manager if anyone comes in to replace him."

Mr Thompson, who is seeking support for a major enhancement scheme at the Pewsey ground to attract new players and bigger crowds said an announcement will be made over the weekend.

He said: "We cannot afford to drop out of the Screwfix league so we need to bring in somebody who can restore the pride in the side and attract new players."
