CHIPPENHAM mum Catherine Thatcher, 53, will be jumping off the top of Salisbury College to raise money for the Red Cross.

Mrs Thatcher, of Ashfield Road, will abseil from the 70 foot high building on Saturday at 11.30pm.

She has never abseiled before and confessed she might feel a bit nervous when she has to climb over the edge.

"I'm looking forward to it," she said. "But I could be scared when the time comes."

Husband Michael has promised to hand over £20 for the Red Cross if she musters the courage for the descent.

Housewife Mrs Thatcher, who has two grown-up children Robert and Samantha, is treasurer of the Chippenham and District branch of the Red Cross and was inspired to take up the challenge as a novel way to raise funds for the organisation.

She has not received any training.

"It's just a case of turn up and find out what to do," she said.

"I've never done anything remotely similar to this before."

The event is organised by the Wiltshire county branch of the Red Cross, with volunteers abseiling down the building every half hour.
