A man died under the wheels of a train as it headed for Swindon.

The unidentified victim was hit by the 7.35am Carmarthen-Paddington service.

British Transport Police have launched an investigation and an inquest is expected. No other details of the victim or the accident had been released by early today.

The train had reached Hay Lane near Swindon shortly after 10am yesterday when the accident happened.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "There are no suspicious circumstances, and inquiries are continuing. The person has not yet been identified."

The train was operated by First Great Western.

Spokeswoman Jo Smyth said the service was held up for 45 minutes before continuing tom Paddington.

She added that the tracks to and from London were initially closed, although one was later reopened. Mrs Smyth was unable to say how severe delays had been.
