The sound of smashing glass should no longer rob Wroughton residents of a good night's sleep.

Those living in Spencers Orchard claim they have suffered months of misery at the expense of those using a recycling scheme in the village.

But now Swindon Borough Council will fit bottle banks with a special muffling device, costing £1,560.

The recycling centre is located in the Ellendune Centre car park, which backs onto Spencers Orchard.

A petition signed by 14 residents was presented to the council in August, complaining that the sound of smashing glass was becoming intolerable, with people using the glass and paper recycling site from 6am to 11pm.

Petition organiser Eric Best said the recycling centre had affected the quality of life for residents.

"It is crash, crash, crash. We have even had people using the centre on Christmas Day," he said.

John Short, the council's director of Swindon Contractors and Recrea-tion Services, said: "A muffler system can be fitted, which uses sound insulating material to line the bottle banks.

"New containers would need to be purchased, which would be supplied ready-lined."
