ST FRANCIS Church celebrated a birthday double with events to mark the 60th anniversary of one of Salisbury's most distinctive buildings and 70 years since the parish was established.

The special weekend included a party, complete with birthday cake, held at St Francis Church Hall on Saturday, October 8.

Events recalled the origin of the £13,000 building, which was begun in 1939 and halted when the builders went bust.

Work was completed by local firm, Wort and Way, whose workmen witnessed Battle of Britain dogfights near Middle Wallop from the rooftop.

The church was consecrated on October 5, 1940, ten years after the parish of Sarum St Francis was formed to complement the expansion of Salisbury northwards.

The church hall, built in 1957, was the venue for the celebration supper.

Guests with a special part to play were Norman and Phyllis Chant, the first couple to be married at the church and who are soon to celebrate their own diamond anniversary.
