BRIDGEWATER 46, SALISBURY 5: The score, plus the fact that Bridgwater are two leagues higher, gives the impression of a pre-determined rout.
But that was far from the truth, as any of the 30 or so Salisbury supporters who made the 160-mile round trip will testify.
For the first half and for 15 minutes of the second, Salisbury were well in contention. Their forwards were magnificent, stealing opposition lineouts, strikes against the head and pushing Bridgwater off their ball on four occasions.
The first half was end-to-end rugby with Salisbury looking certain to open the score with a well taken scrum 15 yards from Bridgwater's tryline. But a loose pass gave the home side possession with an overlap and, against the run of play, the visitors trailed by seven points.
Early in the second half a Salisbury rampage down the pitch led to Toby Marden scoring. Salisbury then lost their game pattern and Bridgwater, sensing an opening, threw all their replacements on at the critical moment.
From being only 14-5 up, Bridgwater's fresh legs took the wind from Salisbury and the try count mounted.
