I AM afraid that the letter headed "learn a lesson from car mad Europe" was not explicit enough as no reason was given why Italy, with the highest car ownershiop and the lowest car journeys was so.
Having lived in Italy for ten years the reason is simple. Every village has a bus service and every town has a train station, both services are state owned and subsidised so all journeys are well used and shoppers and workers do not need to use their cars.
Only people like me used the car to go to a bus stop, a mere two or three kilometers away, as we lived out in the sticks. Mr Prescott please learn from other countries' successes.
