WATCHING Ann Widdecombe's speech on cannabis £100 fines, I was struck by the tone as well as content, much like a Nuremberg Rally; then later Charles Kennedy for the Liberal Democrats said cannabis should be legalised, the libertarian side of me tended to agree with this after all, some of my generation enjoyed a large quantity of alcohol in jazz clubs.
However, there is a downside I haven't heard any politician discuss safety. If cannabis becomes as available as tobacco, will the young women pushing prams incautiously into traffic then have cannabis in their systems? Will no airline pilot, no train driver, no surgeon smoke cannabis? And will car divers feeling somewhat frustrated after only two pints in the pub go on to cannabis to finish the evening?
I feel Ann Widdecombe and the Tory Party go too far and the liberal view has not been thought through I say keep things exactly as they are.
