What D Roberts calls a "crackpot scheme" for rubbish collection is in fact one of the methods recommended by the government and used successfully for many years by 'beacon councils' such as Daventry and Eastleigh.
Furthermore, it is an option supported by 63 per cent of West Wiltshire residents in a large scale public consultation that was part of an extensive Best Value review.
Thirty per cent of our bin contents consist of 'green waste' from gardens and kitchen, a further 30 is paper and card.
With the kerbside paper collection extending across the district, and the twin bin system, West Wiltshire will be able to meet national and international recycling targets. At the same time, two of the most damaging wastes in landfill will be eliminated.
It is quite right that we do this, as landfills contribute significantly to global warming through methane generated by the rotting of such waste. There is no 'do nothing' option unless you want to condemn the next generation to a world of mass starvation and disastrous climate change.
Wheelie bins were designed to have close fitting lids which prevent flies and smells. (They were also designed to contain two weeks' waste and when they were introduced most people complained they were too large! How much more waste we generate today!)
Green waste can be wrapped in newspaper to further reduce any risk.
Dozens of other authorities operate compost collection schemes without problems.
However, if Mr Roberts and Mr Howard would still like reassurance, I would invite them to join a fact- finding visit of district and parish councillors which is going to Daventry on October 30.
Similarly, if anyone else would like further details about the new waste scheme, then please do not hesitate to write to me at the council.
Cllr Adrian Fox,
West Wilts District Council.
