DEVIZES Town manager Brian Newlands is planning a safety first approach as he bids to lead his team through to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday October 14.

Devizes face a tricky looking third qualifying round tie at Saltdean United, but the reward for the winners could be a money-spinning tie against one of the top non-league sides in the country in the next round.

Newlands has not been to watch Saltdean, but through his contacts in the game has learned that the Sussex County League side will be no pushovers.

"From what I've heard Saltdean are a well organised and useful side. I think it's going to be a tough and tight game and we will certainly be taking a more cautious and defensive approach than normal," said Newlands.

"We don't have to win this game in 90 minutes and if it ends in a draw and a replay at our place on Tuesday night, then so be it."

"We have got to go out and be solid from the start and keep things tight for at least the first 20 minutes."

For the first time this season Newlands has a full strength squad to select from, with Chris Jones and Justin King available again after proving their fitness in recent reserves games after recovering from long term injuries.

Mark Brown and Julian Alexander, who were unavailable for last week's game at Yeovil, also return and Newlands will take a 16 or 17 man squad.

"There will be changes from last Saturday's line-up," said Newlands.

Anyone interested in travelling with the team should contact the club for further details.

Yeovil Town Reserves 4, Devizes Town 0

A DISMAL first half showing from Brian Newlands' side in Saturday's Screwfix Direct League Premier Division match left them with an uphill task in the second period, which they were unable to climb.

The hosts, bolstered by the inclusion of several first team squad players, comfortably secured the three points which sees them continue to challenge Taunton at the top of the table

Devizes, looking barely a shadow of the side which had won so easily at Paulton on their last league outing, produced some dour football in the opening 45 minutes.

They fell behind in the 16th minute when Yeovil first team player-coach Steve Thompson created an opening which was saved by namesake Paul, only for Chris Giles to net the rebound to give Yeovil the lead.

Devizes were instantly forced to shuffle their pack when Jamie Gale limped off to be replaced by the returning Chris Copp.

The change had little effect on the pattern of play, as the hosts continued to dominate, Darren Walters clearing from his own line to deny Giles a second and Glenn Poole seeing his first time strike fly wide of the upright.

Poole was again off target with a shot following another free flowing Yeovil attack, before Devizes had their first shot in anger on 40 minutes, David Lloyd's persistence finally creating an opening for Barry Flippance, whose shot was well saved by the under worked Andy Avery.

On the stroke of half-time, a mistake from Town captain Andy Coombes let Yeovil in again. And when the ball arrived wide left to an unmarked Poole, he gratefully accepted the chance to bury a second past the exposed Thompson.

Devizes produced a more spirited showing after the interval, with Lloyd heading over and Flippance unable to hit the target from Nick Mooney's centre. Two goals in as many minutes however completed Town's miserable afternoon. First Yeovil's twin substitutions Jon Vance and Daniel Nancarrow set up Poole, whose sweetly struck curling shot flew into the net for his second and the hosts' third. Then Giles found himself completely unmarked and rounded Thompson to complete the scoring.

Pewsey Vale 0, Exmouth Town 11

VALE, playing their first game in three weeks, were put under pressure by Exmouth Town, from the start and this was to last for 95 per cent of the game with the home side not managing a single shot at the Exmouth goal.

Exmouth's goal blitz started in the eighth minute with the first of four goals scored by Doug Jane and ended with the 11th goal in the 88th minute with a goal scored by Danny Williams.

The first half ended 3-0, with Jane completing his hat-trick.

Within three minutes of the start of the second half, Exmouth went further into the lead through Steve May.

Vale had midfielder Stuart Card sent off, when his frustration with the team's performance resulted with him being red carded for foul language towards the referee.

During the second half the Vale brought on Tom Pointing for Tom Adams and Steve Wootton for Peter Rowde.

But the rot continued and the Pewsey heads went further down and the defence had no answer to the pressure put on them, with goalkeeper Andy Doel being used for shooting practice.

Further goal for Exmouth came from Jane, Richard Pears, Dave Roddick, Andy Winger and Paul Pocock (2).

Vale manager Steve Wootton was "very disappointed" after the 11-0 humiliation, which leaves his team rooted to the bottom of the table.

He says he wants to sign some new players quickly, to try and recover from the mess his team is in.

"We're hoping to bring in some new faces before the weekend to help us get out of this situation," he said on Monday.

Injuries to key players have left the side with very little experience.

"We're having to play too many youngsters at the moment. There's not enough experience and we're lacking confidence, especially the youngsters," he said.

Despite the troublesome start to the season, Wootton believes his side can turn things around.

"We need to start winning. Once we get our confidence up, things will improve."
