I AM writing this letter in the hope that your newspaper will print it, to voice the utter disgust and distress my family and I feel over what has befallen the TA Centre in Bythesea Road in Trowbridge.
As my husband passed the TA Centre the other weekend, he noticed that there was someone at the back of the building. At first, he thought that it may be contractors starting work, but as it turned out it was not.
To our distress, we found that travellers had entered into the property. After four days, they were moved on, by whom we do not know, but are very thankful, and the travellers moved 50 yards up the road to the Wincanton yard, and at the time of writing, they are still there.
My husband and I, and my young granddaughter, drove into the TA Centre on the day they left as the gates were open, to check that everything was still locked up, so that we could inform the MOD. The sight that greeted us could not have been worse than if a bomb had gone off. The wanton destruction was unbelievable. Windows were smashed, boardings that were over doors were pulled off, and the doors kicked in. The hangars were broken into, and the mess they had left was devastating.
The reason for writing this letter is that my husband and myself, and our six children lived there for 20 years, and have many memories and emotions about the TA, ranging from utter joy to utter desolation. Our youngest son was born while we lived there, and we felt the joy as our other children had children of their own. Also, our eldest son died in a car accident while we lived there, so there are a lot of memories of him there as well.
There were a lot more happy and emotional times there.
Have these people no compassion for anything?
They complain that there are no sites for them. After witnessing this destruction and devastation I and my family can totally understand why. Our two daughters are so utterly devastated by what has happened, they cannot even bear to look at the building that was once their home.
MRS D DEADMAN,
Trowbridge.
