Whether it was the Wiltshire Times's slant on the story, or a throwaway comment in the midst of more complex council proceedings, but comparing Trowbridge with Ibiza is, quite frankly, absurd.
Whilst I am not specifically vindicating the Juice night club's application to stay open until 3am, such a sensationalist comparison is surely nowhere near sufficient nor appropriate enough to seal any argument.
If anyone from West Wiltshire District Council (specifically Cllr Osborn) is basing their judgment on the grotesque TV documentaries of 18-30 holidays in Ibiza, then perhaps they need to have a night out in Trowbridge to reassure themselves that it really isn't quite that bad after all.
I would be very interested to hear on what evidence Cllr Osborn compares the county town of Wiltshire with a distant haven of debauchery and freedom from parental control.
It seems that councillors often miss the point; there is not a single town in the UK which does not have a problem with people leaving nightclubs, and I'm sure the police would agree it is always the minority.
In my experience in a variety of towns, problems only really occur in the close vicinity of the club itself. This can be exacerbated when people leaving different clubs clash at particular points, say for example, a kebab van.
If it is people clashing in other areas that the police are particularly concerned with, then I believe the only solution would be to stagger closing times, perhaps on a rotational basis to be fair to each club.
Obviously I am not clued up on the merits of the application for Juice's extension, nor the applications for new establishments, but when clubs in other areas are opening until 3am, it will be surely be Trowbridge that misses out on business in the long term.
I go to the Pig Club in Church Street anyway. Perhaps Cllr Osborn and Cllr Fuller would like to accompany us for a night out there?

l It certainly was not a Wiltshire Times "slant", we merely report the news. But we too found the comparison between Ibiza and Trowbridge a little strange. Editor
