Closed circuit television will be installed at two shopping centres in response to public demand.

People in Swindon's Parks and Walcot areas called for the cameras to be installed in Cavendish Square and Sussex Square respectively.

They believe the measures will combat vandalism and anti-social behaviour. The concerns were highlighted at a meeting of Swindon Council's cabinet.

Members hope that Swindon Contractors, the council body in charge of installing the cameras, will have completed the task by the New Year at the latest.

Earlier this year, £214,000 was allocated for the project, but during the summer the plans were absorbed into a £1.75 million scheme for CCTV at various other locations.

At the cabinet meeting, it was decided to press ahead with this broader project, which will include 86 cameras.

But Coun Barrie Thompson (Lab, Parks), said he was urging Swindon Contractors to get the new system up and running in Parks and Walcot as soon as possible. CCTV cameras, of which there are already 18 in Swindon, have been shown to reduce crime levels and also ease the public's fears about becoming crime victims.

Parks and Walcot are already the subject of an improvement scheme which, when complete, will see improved lighting, a general clean-up and better facilities for the local people.
