EXETER CITY: Leaving August with no wins under our belt and only a 1-1 draw against Exeter in the home leg, left supporters heading to Devon, more in hope than expectation, that we could go through to the second round.

What delight to find ourselves leading 2-0 just before half time and deservedly ahead. Too good to be true! We spent the second half biting our nails as we hung on.

Driving away the final drama was played out on the radio as Town fanatic Vic Morgan relayed to his present B B C Radio Devon audience how the local team had been booted out of the competition by opponents closer to his heart than his audience perhaps realised. A professional performance by Vic but we knew!

BRISTOL CITY: It's true to say that Ashton Gate is far from a favourite venue. Many disappointments over the years, but not this time!

Played in front of a half empty stadium, was it really only half full? Didn't seem that way. Noisy Town supporters won easily the battle of the sound and the team mirrored the performance on the field with Bristol players falling about with exhaustion by the end.

The fans sang 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and 'Colin Todd's Barmy Army' with gusto, passion and sheer pride. Quite a surprise with Alan Reeves emerging as a new cult hero having scored for two games running. Terry B. came and gave us a wave before the game setting the mood for the day. On our way up!

BOURNEMOUTH: Just picking up momentum for Bournemouth and what do we get a fuel blockade! Talk is more about how we can get to the game rather than the match itself.

Being creative, around 500 Town fans populate the Brighton Beach end despite the travel difficulties. What a let down! Just when our pre match plans were how we could celebrate our third away win in eight days the team turn in the most inept display of the season.

Hardly a tackle went in ( perhaps the worry was that Graham Poll was the ref) as we allowed Bournemouth the freedom of their pitch and the performance wavered between passionless and gutless. What a let down so soon after a brilliant result. When a small group of Town fans started singing 'What a Waste of Petrol' the humour was not lost on the Bournemouth supporters who reciprocated in similar vein. A match best forgotten.

IF only there was as much petrol around the week before, as rain on Merseyside, then our game against Cambridge wouldn't have been called off and we would have taken even more fans to Bournemouth. But Tranmere, in the pouring rain, gave Town a decent result, even if our goal was a little bizarre, but then again, at this time we will take anything.

Some fans were late getting to the coach pick up point as the hoax of a renewed petrol blockade helped to cause traffic chaos. Bart showed that experience isn't everything as he saved our a penalty from an historic Town 'hero'.

LUTON: And so on to the 'bedroom scenes'. Luton has not been a footballing venue enjoyed in the past with very few victories, but it does add one element of spice not seen at most grounds.

Tucked in and right against terraced houses, the view from the back of the 'away' terrace leads straight to the first floor rooms of the adjoining houses. If action on the field is non-existent there is always the hope of alternative entertainment!

Thankfully, three cracking goals saw Town eyes firmly focussed on the field and the only distraction was the number of Town fans falling over the seats each time we scored, due to the little leg room between seats.

TRANMERE (H): Our inability to perform consistently saw us out of the Worthington Cup courtesy of a 1-0 Tranmere victory during which our shot count failed to exceed nil. A let down just as we seemed to be getting our act together.

WIGAN (H): Against Wigan we come upon a prima donna refereee whose sole intent, is being the key player, in a game including 25 individuals. Always seemingly needing to be the centre of attention, once again the foul count appears to go against us. Although the team turn in a good performance, chances to put us in a match-winning position are spurned and we are caught almost on the line by a late equaliser.

HIGH and LOW

HIGH: The last 10 minutes at Ashton Gate followed by the five minutes after the end of the match, with the sheer exuberance of the Town fans getting one over on a local rival.

LOW: The performance at Bournemouth after the encouragement of previous away matches.

VERDICT: The mood at the end of the second month is a little more upbeat than at the end of month one. Performances appear to be improving in level of consistency, but, the mood has not yet reached the hyped-up level of pre-season.
