A MAN who tried to slash his partner's prize designer coat ended up cutting her instead, a court heard.
At Swindon Crown Court, David Thompson pleaded guilty to causing the woman actual bodily harm and two counts of causing criminal damage.
Sentencing him to seven months in jail, recorder Mr Oba Nsugbe told him: "There is no excuse for attacking a woman under any circumstances. It is extremely fortunate she continues to support you but I must impose a custodial sentence."
Prosecuting, Mark Ashley told the court police were called to the injured woman's address after a report of an argument.
Thompson and a woman were advised regarding a breach of the peace, said Mr Ashley.
In interview 31-year-old Thomp-son, of Penhill, conceded he had picked up the Stanley knife as a result of an argument.
He said: "He meant to slash her designer coat. Once he carried out this attempt he realised she was bleeding and he felt 'freaked out'."
Defending, Jason Taylor told the court the injury caused was minor, the woman had not supported the prosecution, had visited Thompson on remand and had written letters and cards to him.
