Well done Swindon Borough Council. By turning to gas power for its new fleet of vehicles it is saving taxpayers thousands of pounds every year in running costs.
It is also sending out the message that it is prepared to embrace a radical and imaginative new approach in order to help out the environment.
It was due to replace its fleet anyway and this batch of 79 gas vehicles is the largest of its kind ever bought under contract by a local authority in Britain.
The vans and tipper trucks have the advantage of costing just a third of the price of diesel to run and are also in a lower car tax bracket.
The vehicles will help clean up the air in Swindon and ensure the council is one step ahead if our roads once again come to a standstill through a fuel crisis.
It is a road which more of us will surely want to follow. Now it is up to petrol companies to ensure liquified petroleum gas known as LPG is made more available on petrol station forecourts throughout the town.
Only then can every one of us join the green revolution that will offer cheaper motoring and cleaner air.
