THE proposed new doctor's surgery and clinic to be built on Colingsmead is an opportunity not to be missed. I hope that residents of Eldene approve of the site.

The proposed site is on land between the existing health centre's car park and the children's play area.

This site was preferred because of its close proximity to those elderly residents who live at Bob May Court, Eric Long Court and Charles McPherson Gardens.

Other sites considered would have been detrimental to these elderly residents. The local community must take this opportunity to bring their medical provision into the 21st century.

The Labour Government are investing up to £1 billion in primary care facilities, which includes funds for 3,000 doctors' premises to be substantially refurbished or replaced by 2004.

Eldene's present health centre will remain in the Eldene Centre, with the new Primary Care Centre being built at Colingsmead.

The Government's record investment will allow for a range of brand new types of NHS facilities. It will be for the Swindon Primary Care Group, Social Services and the doctors and their staff to determine what services are to be made available for future patients who live east of Swindon.
