PERMANENT reminders of loved ones are helping to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the Kennet and Avon Canal.
Their success has been such that organisers are now extending the initiative to protect the waterway even further.
The popularity of the Trust's Adoption Scheme is proven by the many supporters who have already adopted locks, bridges and lengths of the canal, in memory of their loved ones.
The scheme has so far raised £30,000 for waterway improvements and supporting the mammoth Heritage Lottery Fund-backed restoration campaign.
For £2.50 for a nominated length, £50 for a bridge or £100 for a lock, each adopter is placed in a share register in the Canal Trust Museum.
An adoption certificate showing the unique details is also sent to the subscriber.
Now there are two further offers.
Direct delivery birthday greetings provide canal enthusiasts with a very special present, and lost loved ones can also be remembered with an adoption.
The mastermind behind the scheme is Kennet and Avon Canal Trust volunteer Peter Lindley-Jones.
He said: "We are continually amazed at the various reasons why sections of the waterway are being adopted.
"Whether it is remembering a friend or member of the family who has passed away, or a special occasion which links to the canal, everybody has given us very positive feedback about the scheme."
