Clothing retailer C&A has set a date for the closure of its Swindon store, which will result in the loss of 34 jobs.

The company will shut up shop in the Brunel Centre on Sunday January 28 next year after more than 20 years of trading in the town. The store's lease has been surrendered to the building's landlord, MEPC.

C&A announced its decision to close all of its 109 UK and Ireland stores over the next six to eight months in June this year after it made losses of £250 million.

Fierce competition in the UK high street coupled with the squeezing of the clothing market by discount and specialist outlets were blamed.

In all 4,800 people will lose their jobs. Employees in Swindon have received on-site help to find new employment through training.

C&A UK's managing director Neil McCausland said: "The decision to close our stores and operations in the UK and Ireland has been a very difficult but necessary step. However, the commitment and loyalty of the store staff has been amazing."

The retailer has been trading in Swindon since 1979. Its store has two trading floors with a selling area of more than 2,000 square metres.
