DEVIZES town councillors have backed plans for a household recycling centre on the county council's depot in Horton Road.
Residents of Ferozeshah Road and Hamilton Drive are against the plans by Marlborough-based Hills Waste because they fear increased traffic and pollution.
The centre will take glass, newspapers, cans and textiles. Kennet District Council says it is needed to meet Government recycling targets.
At the town council's community committee meeting on Tuesday, councillors supported the plan but called for a crossing to be installed on Horton Road to improve road safety and for security cameras to be provided at the site.
Coun Ray Taylor said: "It's an absolutely essential facility for Devizes. It's a sensible re-use of a brownfield site. The nearest house is 100 metres away."
The application will be decided by the county council in due course.
