URGENT work on roads in the centre of Devizes will begin on Monday, October 23, in a bid to stop the surface breaking up in the frosts.
Contractors will move in to Brewery Corner, Estcourt Street and Southbroom Road after 6pm to repair damage caused by subsidence due to the movement of underlying greensand.
District highway surveyor Graeme Hay said: "The surfaces have been getting worse and if we don't do them before the frosts come they'll blow.
"Disruption will be kept to the minimum by working in the evenings during the school half-term holiday."
Excavation will be done between 6.30pm and 9pm. The roads will be serviceable by the morning.
Work will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but no work will carried out over the weekend. Surfacing will be done in the evenings of November 1 and 2.
