Odd Down 0, Chippenham Town 1
ON-LOAN striker Peter Varley helped Chippenham Town erase the memory of Saturday's disappointing home defeat by setting up the winning goal in Tuesday night's Premier Division game at Odd Down.
Varley, who has joined Chippenham on loan from Dr Martens League side Tiverton, broke away in the 65th minute and crossed for co-striker Dave Bright to smash the ball home from 12 yards.
With leading goalscorer Steve Tweddle suspended and Mark Cutler's appearances limited by injury, Chippenham manager Tommy Saunders moved quickly to sign Varley, who scored the winning goal for Tiverton in the FA Carlsberg Vase final two years ago.
But Saunders revealed later that the Odd Down match could be Varley's only appearance for the Bluebirds.
"Peter remains a Tiverton player at the moment, although we are hoping to make the signing permanent," he said.
"It was a much better performance than Saturday and we played some quality football at times."
Chippenham Town 0, Barnstaple Town 1
CHIPPENHAM had been very disappointing in Saturday's shock home defeat by mid-table Barnstaple.
And to add to Chippenham's woes they had captain Lea James sent off in the second half.
The visitors were penned back in their own half for long periods, but broke out to score the all important goal in the 14th minute, when some neat interplay ended with Ben Hayne scoring.
Chippenham were forced to reshuffle when Kenny Hughes limped off with a knee injury in the 36th minute.
The visitors' goal bore a charmed life in the second half as the ball was cleared off the line on four occasions.
To add to their misery, Chippenham were down to 10 men for the final quarter, Lea James being shown the red card for a second bookable offence.
"I couldn't see from where I was what James was sent off for, so I cannot comment on it," said Saunders.
"I was very disappointed with the result and the performance, which was very poor.
"We had more than our fair share of the play, but didn't put our chances away."
Better news for Chippenham supporters is that Tweedle has signed a 12 month extension to his present contract, committing him to the club until June 2002.
Chippenham travel to Bishop Sutton on Saturday when they will be without Cutler, John Woods, Lee Collier and Hughes (all injured) and Tweedle and Burns through suspension.
Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Devizes followed their FA Cup win at Saltdean with a 2-1 home win over Brislington.
