THE owner of a Trowbridge nightspot praised his staff's quick and professional actions after a man was left with deep neck injuries after an incident at Trowbridge Snooker Club.

Colin Lee, father of snooker ace Steven Lee, admitted he was disgusted by the attack two weeks ago, but said his club was still one of the safest in the town.

Mr Lee, who has owned the club for more than 10 years, said: "I was gutted this happened and we could have such an incident here. This is the first incident since I have been here. That goes to show that we don't have trouble.

"The incident happened so quickly our doormen couldn't get there in time. The police said they were pleased with how we dealt with it. The doormen escorted one party away and first aiders attended the injured guy and gave him medical attention."

Robbie Gage, 30, of Westbury, was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath after the incident.

He suffered deep cuts to the neck and underwent minor surgery, but was released the following day.

Mr Lee credited the number of trained doormen and the type of clientele attracted to his premises as reasons why his club has one of the safest records in the town.

He added: "We have more ladies coming here than lads which shows how safe they feel here. It is a ratio of about two to one."

l David Campbell, 35, of Black Horse Lane, Westbury, appeared before north west Wiltshire magistrates in Trowbridge last Thursday charged with intentional wounding in relation to the incident.

He was released on unconditional bail until December 7.
